The challenges of building an MCP server

Building an MCP server sounds straightforward until you try to do it at scale. When we set out to build Cloudsmith's MCP server, we quickly discovered that exposing dozens of API endpoints to AI agents wasn't just a matter of wrapping a few functions.

This talk shares the real-world challenges encountered when building an MCP server for a production API with extensive surface area:

• The scaling problem: How do teams maintain dozens or hundreds of tool definitions without losing their minds?
• The consistency trap: Keeping tool schemas in sync with the actual API as it evolves.

It shows how these challenges were addressed by building a dynamic server that automatically generates tools from an OpenAPI specification. This approach transformed the server from a maintenance burden into a self-updating interface that stays in sync with the API.
