Shift carbon impact left: A win/win for FinOps and engineering teams

The ICT sector produces 1.5–4% of global emissions, similar to aviation. Engineers can reduce carbon & cost through smarter infrastructure choices. InfraCarbon shows the cost and carbon impact of code changes pre-deploy.

The ICT sector, which includes data centres, networks, and devices, produces roughly 1.5% to 4% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. That puts it in the same range as the aviation industry.

Engineers are in a unique position to collectively decarbonize millions of tonnes of CO2 from behind their laptops, and in doing so, they can also reduce costs. There is a correlation between these outcomes. Switching from an m3 to an m6i can save money and carbon.

During the research, it became clear early on that many engineers care just as much about environmental impact as they do about cost.

This session shows InfraCarbon running live, a tool that proactively shows the carbon impact of code changes alongside costs directly in GitHub, where engineers work. Attendees will learn:
• What shifting FinOps left looks like
• How that shift can be extended to show carbon impact alongside cost
• How engineers can take proactive actions as they code

This talk is beneficial to FinOps engineers and platform teams who want to see what shifting left looks like in reality.
