Platform engineering at Dynatrace: What we’ve learned so far

Learn how a discussion led Dynatrace to investigate the usage of Backstage in almost every department, from 1000+ developers in R&D to post-sales teams.

I was asked to create a platform engineering training and agreed on one condition: as long as it's not just demoware that we throw away after the training. Little did I realize we were also rolling out Backstage to our 1000+ developers. The interest in the training was extreme, almost every department lead came to speak to me at our conference. I then realized that the demo platform (Backstage, Argo, OpenTelemetry, OpenFeature, Keptn, etc.) would be applicable to other teams including post-sales to create training environments, and sales enablement to create demo environments. Plus, all the learnings were being fed back to R&D. The process demonstrated how platform engineering can solve real business problems at a massive scale, provide standardization, and show stakeholder value quickly.
