Your org chart is infrastructure: Building your own software catalogue
As organisations scale, service ownership, cloud resource usage and alert routing spread across tools and are hard to track. This talk explores how a simple YAML setup can act as a single source of truth to automate governance without costly tools.

As organizations grow and teams evolve service ownership, IAM permissions, cloud resource usage, GitHub access, and alert routing become scattered across systems and repositories. To avoid complex and costly tools, a simple YAML setup was introduced as a single source of truth for organization structure and service ownership, independent of programming language or framework. This foundation now powers:
• Alert routing to the correct teams and channels
• Tagging cloud resources for usage tracking
• Creating GitHub teams and managing repository access
• Consistent ownership mapping across systems
The resulting system is easy to maintain and has improved governance without adding platform complexity, offering a practical approach for small to mid-sized engineering organizations.
