A blueprint for platforming Kubernetes operations

This talk dives into the challenges, design considerations, tradeoffs, and approaches platform engineering teams can take when building a platform for Kubernetes operations. We’ll discuss how to balance an incredible developer experience with enterprise-wide governance and automation.
Talk abstract

With Kubernetes emerging as the backbone for cloud-native infrastructure and applications, enterprises are looking to scale their Kubernetes operations across different development teams and business units. However, the challenge is how to scale and deliver an incredible developer experience while balancing organizational requirements including cost and security. To overcome this, platform engineering teams must take a platform-as-product approach to building a Kubernetes operations platform.

In this talk we will cover:

  • The typical challenges platform engineers face when it comes to building a Kubernetes platform and balancing the needs of internal stakeholders
  • How platform teams can prioritize key requirements, talk about different design considerations, and balance the relevant tradeoffs when building a Kubernetes platform
  • How to bring a Kubernetes platform to life with tools such as Backstage for developer self-service, while preserving key elements of governance and automation that platform engineering teams need to scale Kubernetes
